thoughts on panhandling

thanks to my friend matt, i've been led to ponder my thoughts/philosophies on responding to human persons who engage in panhandling. I work at a shelter; many of our clients have been homeless and many are mentally ill and/or chemically dependent. I don't necessarily feel that this experience gives me greater insight, but it is my experience.

Juxtaposition

March 3, 2006  On a twenty minute walk to my bus stop after work, weaving through club going folks on 1st Avenue in Belltown, I began thinking what a whacky juxtaposition my life is. Toby/Nat and then downtown Seattle (which is nothing if not a jumble of more juxtapositions...rich/poor, reveling/mourning, making shitloads of money/having absolutely no money) and neither have anything to do with the other. Like George Costanza's 'worlds colliding', however these two have absolutely no chance of doing so, unless you count my alternately battered and exultant psyche.

My son, now more than 8 weeks old and a chunky 14 pounds (95th percentile), for the very first time I can remember yesterday, experienced the survival intinct.
